Welcome!
Welcome to our site. This site tells the story of a small community in Mullingar and the idea of two of its ex inhabitants to have a reunion of past and present neighbours. The thoughts came from both Pat Byrne and Pat keegan. The "Pats" had not met in quite a while and got to chatting about old times, not that they are old,in the area. They talked about people who had lived here and those living here at present.A thought was founded between them that a reunion would make sense. From then on they tossed the idea around in there heads.Would any one else be interested, how would they go about organising it,where would they hold it,what would people pay .All these things seemed daunting.Above all ,all these things would take up considerable amount of their time.Would they have enough time between them.Who would help. The commitment was never a doubt. These two guys have always been resolute and stout of character, this enormous task was not going to phase them.
Green road St Bridgets
The Green and St bridgets is an area situated on the longford side of Mullingar town.It consist of 120 or so houses consisting of terrace, semi d and bungalows. The houses were predominantly council houses inhabited by working families. Many of these were Army,Council,P and T and Railroad orientated. However a varied mix of occupations were represented by many families there. An easy way to explain its whereabouts is to say that it borders Marshalls,a landmark family run grocery.Anyone familiar with the town will know this, just across the road from the ill fated Westhmeath co-op,otherwise known to us as the creamery. Many an illegal game of football was played in its grounds after teatime. It wasnt that the football was illegal, just that it was private property.Actually it was ideal, concrete and few windows and all night free street lighting.Teams of twenty aside were not uncommon, although who was on what team was always a guess.Nowadays we are bounded by Tesco (Christy Fynns field), Abbeylands (Morans field), Aldi (creamery and nuns field) .The surrounding area has changed quite a bit in past years but the spirit of the community remains.Quite a few original family members have bought houses, sometimes their own,and have set up homes here rearing their own families.
